The In the House Performance Series debuts with the hot-blooded sights and sounds of Latin culture. Start the evening off with some passionate flamenco and then get ready to dance to the vibrant sounds of Brazilian music!
Camino Flamenco : For more than five years, these three flamenco performers have been collaborating, enlivening the stage with their innovative and unique sound and their vibrant rhythms. They are all well-known members of the local flamenco community and have performed extensively throughout BC.
Zazueira: Zazueria performs the cream of current and traditional brazilian music, including rhythmic classics of all times. Samba rock and its authentic energy, influences their performance as well as samba, reggae, and forro.
First Nations Showcase
Soak in the final rays of summer as you sit in a flower-filled yard, listening to traditional First Nations’ song, drumming, and storytelling. Immerse yourselves in cultures that have lived on for countless generations. Join in the dancing at the end! The nations represented include Nisga’a, Coast Salish, and the Chehalis people. Enjoy some traditional First Nation’s food during the breaks.
Randy Tait: Randy is Nisga’a / Gitksan Nation and from the house of the Killer Whale clan. He is a First Nation’s traditional storyteller, drummer and dancer. He performs regularly for the public at festival, community events and holidays both solo and with the Nisga’a Ts’amiks dancers.
Kat Norris: Kat Norris is Coast Salish/Nez Perce/Hawaiian Filipina. She is a social advocate for Aboriginal people. She is currently enjoying getting back into the writing and performing scene and pow wowing.
Sasquatch Tours Dance Group: The songs and dances performed come from the spirit of the Chehalis people. The teachings of the Elders say that an opening prayer, song and dance asks the ancestors to call the Spirit “with a good mind and a good heart” to the gathering. At the end of the presentation, participants are encouraged to join the dancers and learn a traditional dance.
Storytelling
Treat yourself to some delectable stories around a cozy fireplace. Wrap yourselves in the flames of imagination, and let the tellers’ magic take you away. Finish off the evening with a dazzling fire show.
evenSteven: evenSteven is a writer and contortionist, and practising martial artist. He retired forever from the public school system to teach his pleasures and passions. Stories from surreal to absurd to eastern mysticism to world literature to urban and rural myth and legend. A post-modern Charlie Chaplin, evenSteven manifests his stories in a uniquely physical manner, contorting his body to approximate his twisted tales. An agent provocateur guaranteed to tickle your funnybone
Mary Gavan:Grandparents in both [Scotland and Ireland] taught me the old legends and the long ballads as they regarded storytelling as a way of life rather than a festival event. I also learnt much from my parents who were skilled raconteurs. At first, I told the old stories, especially those of working with animals. On coming to Canada, I began to expand on the stories to explain Celtic ways and to include my own experiences. Now, I write my own stories combining the wisdom of the past legends with the understanding of my present experiences.
Erin Graham:Erin Graham is a storyteller and stand-up comic. She's from the prairies, which is known for grain, cows and evangelists.
Philomena Jordan: Born and raised in the West of Ireland Philomena personifies the Irish gift for telling stories reciting poetry and spontaneous singing. Since coming to Canada she has entertained audiences at house concerts and schools, at festivals and on television with stories, songs and poetry from her own childhood and from the rich heritage of her native tradition.
Kai Simpson with Amiel Flett-Brown: Kai Simpson has recently written his first story in a series, The Lazy Adventures of Joojoo. The characters in the story are inspired by his real-life friends. He will be telling this tale with his friend and school-mate, Amiel Flett-Brown..
Amiel Flett-Brown has a vivid imagination. He has re-instated the masterful theatric performances of Monty Python and other such thespians through his daily pageantry.
Melanie Ray: Melanie has listened to stories since she first heard her father's rendition of Rapunzel. Telling them started with a wakeful little sister, and has stretched over most of her life into 21 years as a professional. Her latest, telling a two hour Medieval romance to adults across Canada.
Nucleus: Nucleus combines the individual and the group to create powerful interdisciplinary experimental performances. fire dancing, acrobalance, juggling, shadow arts, martial arts, butoh, and modern open form frame but do not contain their choreography.
Eastern Enchantments
This is a special evening. Not only will you be treated to some incredible performances, but your taste buds will also be tantalized with the savory morsels of India. This is a full meal and performance show – an experience you will never forget!
The MantraVani Orchestra: The MantraVani Orchestra is a 6 member World/Sacred Music ensemble featuring some of Vancouver’s finest musicians and singer . The 3 members who will be performing at In The House is Orchestra founder: Jerry DesVoignes on lead vocal & guitar, Elio Rota on keys and guitar, Stefen Cihelka on Tabla. They will perform Bhajans,(chants from India) as well as piece featuring several styles of Throat Singing.
Gargy Banerjee: I have been involved with Orissi Dance for over 10 years and most of my training has been under Dr. Ratna Roy in Washington State. I have also trained under Guru Muralidhar Majhi in India through the Shastri Fellowship. I have performed across Canada, in Washington State as well as in Germany.
Neeraja Aptikar-Dange:Neeraja sings North Indian classical and semi classical music. She also learned semi classical music such as dadra, thumri, hori, kajri and chaiti.
Neeraja has received several awards for classical, semi classical and light music and has performed at many venues and shows through out India and Canada. She is working as a musician and collaborates with western musicians in Vancouver.
The Raw Jazz Experience
It’s a Monday night – no one goes out on a Monday night! Aaah, but for the sounds of some funky live jazz pulsating through a living room, why not chase away those back to work blues, and live it up just one more night! Cocktails and delicious appetizers prepared by Heidi Birk will be served at 6:15 pm.
Zoe Trio:The three experienced musicians responsible for this guitar trio are capable of perfoming many styles proficiently. From subtle, classic jazz to electro style drum and bass, the zoë trio performs original music and standards as well as favorites from contemporary artists such as Bill Frisell, Kurt Rosenwinkle, and John Scofield. An evening with the zoë trio these days means heartfelt melodies and solos backed by an unparalleled rhythmic feel compounding to sustained entertainment from beginning to end. Inhabitants: The music of 'Inhabitants' touches on sounds from early 70's electro-jazz ala Miles Davis to art-rock ala 'God Speed You Black Emperor' to contemporary ambient grooves.
Contemporary Lovers: Vocalist/percussionist supported by an acoustic bass and 6-string guitar, this group of young musicians from Vancouver takes pop music from the last 50 years (eg Tom Waits, the Beatles) and adds a jazzy twist to it. They keep the ideals of the era strongly in mind, without sacrificing originality.
