Music Theatre Dance Spoken Word Storytelling

David J. Adams: David J. Adams is an audio artist, producer, writer, and performer. He has a background in creative writing, theatre and film and a BFA from SFU in electro acoustic composition. Recent works include Eating Cake, an audio play that takes a comical peek behind the backstage world of Vancouver's restaurant industry. Eating Cake aired nationally on CBC radio. His play, Wheel Chair was inspired in part by Japanese Noh Theatre and premiered on Deutschland Radio Berlin. David has also designed sound pieces for dance, theatre, and the web. He has recently received a Canada Council emerging artist grant to finish Fallout, an audio triptych that explores the mythology of the American Dream.

T. Paul Ste. Marie: Poet, emcee, side show barker, entertainer, actor (and so on) T. Paul Ste. Marie has been a facilitator of the spoken word and music art forms for over five years. His spoken word/music fusion weekly open mic series, Thundering Word Heard, is what resulted in this portion of the IN THE HOUSE Fest’s programme. He is an educator, offering performances and workshops in poetry to students across British Columbia, which he describes as his favorite part of his work. His poetry has been described as “jazz poetics” by some, “absolutedoggerel” by others – no matter! However his words are heard, T.Paul is just happy to let them fly to the audience’s ears!

Thundering Word Heard: is Vancouver’s only weekly spoken word/music fusion open mic series. It has featured musicians and poets from all corners of the globe. It’s almost five years of success can be attributed to the vast amount of local talent coming out to TWH on a weekly basis. THUNDERING WORD HEARD has produced stages for the VANCOUVER FOLK FEST, the VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL STORYTELLING FESTIVAL, NEW MUSIC WEST, the IN THE HOUSE FESTIVAL and other more unusual and less-than-expected places for the spoken word art form. The night has been awarded the WestEnder’s Gold Award for “BEST OPEN MIC IN THE WEST” for three consecutive years of it’s over 4 year life (until they cut the category!), and TWH will continue to provide its invaluable outlet for book launches, poetry, comedy, and music for many years more!

WITH: your host T.PAUL

RC Weslowski: boomba loomba shishkablob--there was splashing! there was judy garland's iron lung. as it breathed in and out a sideways angel asphyxiated on her lap and spat out me.
Kim Shaughnessy: Teen angst poetry grows up, drops out of college, comes out of the closet and finds buddism. Kim is the illegitimate child of Courtney Love and Shirley Temple, and has been performing spoken poetry for two years. Kim was one of the semi-finalists to make the 2004 Vancouver poetry Slam Team and represented Vancouver at the 2004 Toronto International Poetry Slam this summer.
Fernando Raguero: Vancouver ’s “everyman” poet Fernando Raguero spares no expense in his being direct with his poetry’s audience. He has the ability to amuse while offending, educate while mocking, and move you while making you gasp. His deadpan verbiage is akin to that of Bukowski’s, as is his use of the everyday happenstances in life for creating his art. He connects with all people on one level or another no matter how offended they may feign being. Raguero has graced stages across North America , sold thousands of his chapbooks to eager poetry lovers, and ventured out on to the limb of verse-battling veracity with the Vancouver Slam team. He is a local and national favorite fella amongst the teeming crowds of lovers, muffin farters, losers, and mirth-makers.

Bill McNamara: Besides being a trucker, McNamara is a cartoonist and Emily Carr graduate from way back. He's been publishing his full-page cartoon strips in Canadian Biker Magazine since the 1970s, as well as writing articles for biking magazines. He is the 2005 Story Slam Winner.

Al Mader a.k.a. The Minimalist Jug Band: He’s a spoken word genius (up there with Shane Koyczan & Randy Jacobs) who also plays the washtub bass!
